Bird flu hits cats in Austria

The news of the spread of H5N1 just keeps building; and the news is bad. The market for chicken seems in a very sorry state at the moment with the outbreak in France causing consumer anxiety. But the worst news seems to be that the virus is hitting more cats, presumably as they come into contact with infected birds. Cat lovers be warned! Austria sources said on Monday the H5N1 bird flu virus had been found in infected cats in the south-eastern province of Styria, while Poland and Serbia on Monday both confirmed the presence of the deadly bird flu strain in wild swans.

USA plan for pandemic

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt is scheduled to be in the Dakotas this week to talk about preparations for a possible bird flu pandemic writes Doris Haugen of Associated Press.
Leavitt is visiting all 50 states to talk about ways government leaders and individual can prepare. He plans to be in Sioux Falls and Bismarck, N.D., on Thursday.
